MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (FOX 2) - Ray Gray spent 50 years in prison for a crime someone else confessed to committing. One painting at a time he is on a mission to help others find the freedom he now has. "Most of this art was done when I was wrongly incarcerated," Gray said. He is reflecting on his time back in the free world one year from when he walked free from a prison in Michigan. "I appreciate the open arms that I've gotten since I've been out," Gray said.

In 1973, Detroit artist and award-winning boxer Ray Gray (Time To Free Ray Gray) was accused of breaking into a local drug dealer’s home and fatally shooting him. Though none of the surviving occupants were able to identify the invaders, Ray became a focus of the investigation. All the hallmarks we’ve come to expect in wrongful convictions manifested: faulty identification processes, unreliable eyewitnesses, tunnel vision, corruption, suppressed evidence, failure to investigate other suspects, just to name a few. Ray Gray was sentenced to life in prison for a murder in 1973. Some believe he’s been wrongly convicted and are working for his release, but his nearly half-century behind bars he’s been a prolific painter, working in acrylics. Gray is one of hundreds of artists in Michigan prisons whose work is featured annually in an exhibition by the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. The exhibition has moved online because of the pandemic. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota learned how work by incarcerated artists is held in high regard by arts faculty at the school, and Gray's challenges in a prison where so many are now infected with COVID-19.
